Your Iowa Launch Checklist
From Home Kitchen to First Sale
Iowa cottage food sellers have one of the shortest paths to market in the country. Work through this checklist in order โ most sellers can complete all steps in a week or two.
โ
Confirm your product qualifies
Verify your food is non-TCS and meets Iowa's cottage food criteria under ยง 137F.20. For acidified products, check the pH โค 4.60 requirement.

Choose a business name
Pick a name that reflects your brand. Search Iowa's Business Entities database to confirm it isn't already in use before committing to packaging, labels, or social media.
Check Name Availability โ
โ
Register your business name (DBA)
If selling under a name other than your own legal name, file a Fictitious Name Resolution with your county recorder. Sole proprietors file at the county level โ not the Secretary of State.

Choose your business structure
Most Iowa cottage food sellers start as sole proprietors. If you want liability protection, consider forming an Iowa LLC ($50 one-time fee). See the comparison below.

Get an EIN from the IRS
An Employer Identification Number (EIN) is free, takes 5 minutes online, and lets you open a business bank account without using your Social Security Number.
Apply Free at IRS.gov โ
โ
Open a dedicated business bank account
Keep your business finances separate from personal โ this is essential for clean bookkeeping, tax preparation, and demonstrating business legitimacy if you ever need a loan.
Use your EIN and DBA name to open

Create compliant labels
Every product needs a label with all 7 required fields โ including the Iowa cottage food disclaimer statement verbatim. Use SellFood's Label Creator with the disclaimer pre-filled.
See Label Requirements โ
โ
List your products and start selling
Iowa has no permit required โ once your labels are compliant and your product qualifies, you're legally authorized to sell. Start at your local farmers market, online, or on SellFood.

๐ก SellFood Recommendation
Start as a sole proprietor to get your first sales and validate your products quickly โ it costs nothing and requires zero paperwork. Once your business is generating consistent revenue (say, $5,000โ$10,000/year) or you're pursuing wholesale accounts, forming an Iowa LLC is worth the $50 investment for the liability protection it provides. The $30 biennial report is one of the lowest ongoing compliance costs in the country.
Business Name Registration
Registering a DBA (Trade Name) in Iowa
If you want to sell under a business name that isn't your own legal name โ "Hawkeye Honey Co." instead of "Sarah Williams" โ you need to register a DBA (doing business as) trade name in Iowa.
๐ค
Sole Proprietor DBA
File a Fictitious Name Resolution with the county recorder in the county where your business operates. This is not a Secretary of State filing. First check name availability at sos.iowa.gov, then submit the form to your county.
Fee: approximately $7 for first page + $5 per additional page (varies by county). Failure to register a trade name used in business is a simple misdemeanor under Iowa Code 547.4.
๐ข
LLC DBA
Iowa LLCs and corporations file trade name (DBA) registrations with the Iowa Secretary of State โ not the county recorder. This is done through the Fast Track Filing system, the same portal used to form the LLC.
File through Fast Track Filing at sos.iowa.gov/fasttrackfiling. LLCs may file a Resolution to Adopt a Fictitious Name with a fee set by the Secretary of State.
๐
Name Availability Search
Before filing any DBA, search the Iowa Business Entities database to confirm your desired name isn't already in use by an existing Iowa entity. A conflicting name could cause your filing to be rejected or create legal confusion.
๐ท๏ธ
Using Your DBA on Labels
Once registered, you may use your DBA name on product labels, at farmers markets, and on your SellFood storefront. Your cottage food label must still show the producer's name and contact โ your DBA name satisfies the "name" portion of that requirement.
Pro tip: Open a business bank account in your DBA name using your EIN for clean financial separation.
Taxes & Financial Obligations
Understanding Your Iowa Tax Obligations
Running a home food business in Iowa means navigating a few different tax obligations. None are especially complex for a small cottage food seller โ but knowing what applies saves you from surprises at tax time.
Flat 3.8% โ Tax Year 2025
Iowa now has a flat personal income tax rate of 3.8% for tax year 2025, transitioning to 3.9% in 2026. Business income from your sole proprietorship or LLC flows through to your personal Iowa return (IA 1040). Report business profit and loss on Schedule IA โ analogous to federal Schedule C. Iowa has no franchise tax or business privilege tax on small LLCs.
Iowa Department of Revenue โ
15.3% on Net Business Profit
Self-employment tax (Social Security + Medicare) is a federal obligation โ not Iowa-specific โ but critical to budget for. It applies to net business profit at 15.3% up to the Social Security wage base, then 2.9% above it. You can deduct half of SE tax on your federal return. Pay quarterly estimated taxes to avoid underpayment penalties (IRS Form 1040-ES).

Most Cottage Food: Exempt
Iowa exempts most unprepared grocery food from sales tax โ including shelf-stable baked goods, jams, granola, and packaged dry goods. However, candy is taxable in Iowa. If your product mix includes only exempt items, you may not need a sales tax permit at all. The permit is free at tax.iowa.gov if you do need one. When in doubt, call IDR: (515) 281-3114.

Setting Your Prices
Pricing Your Iowa Cottage Food Products
Underpricing is the most common mistake Iowa home food sellers make. Your price needs to cover costs, reflect your time, and leave room for growth โ not just match grocery store prices.
๐งฎ Know Your Cost of Goods
Calculate the exact ingredient cost per unit, including packaging and labels. Don't estimate โ buy in bulk and track every item. Your COGS is the floor below which you can never price. Most home bakers significantly underestimate COGS until they track it carefully for a full production run.
โฑ๏ธ Value Your Time Honestly
Decide your target hourly rate and track how long each batch takes to produce, package, and label. Divide by units produced to get your labor cost per unit. A common minimum: $15โ$25/hour for skilled food production. Many sellers price without factoring in any labor โ this is how businesses fail to sustain themselves.
๐ท๏ธ Benchmark the Market
Visit Iowa farmers markets and artisan food events to see what comparable products sell for. Premium handmade cottage food typically commands a 2โ4ร premium over grocery store equivalents. Buyers at farmers markets expect and accept handmade pricing โ don't undercut yourself to match grocery shelves.
๐ Build in Margin to Grow
Aim for a gross margin of at least 50โ60% โ meaning if your COGS + labor per unit is $4, you should be pricing at $8โ$10. This margin funds marketing, equipment upgrades, packaging improvements, event fees, and eventual expansion to the HFPE program. A tight margin now limits every option later.
Sales Channels
Where to Sell Your Iowa Cottage Food
Iowa's cottage food rules authorize a wide variety of sales channels. Iowa is one of the few states that explicitly permits online sales and shipping โ giving Iowa sellers access to the entire state (and potentially beyond) from day one.
๐ก
From Your Home or Farm
Sell directly from your residence or farm property. Customers come to you, or you deliver to them โ both are fully authorized. Great for building a loyal local customer base and reducing booth fees.
Check local zoning before hosting frequent customer visits at home
๐
Iowa Farmers Markets
Iowa has 170+ farmers markets statewide. The Des Moines Downtown Farmers' Market is one of the Midwest's largest, running Saturdays MayโOctober. You must operate your own booth as the producer.
Contact individual markets for vendor applications and booth fees

SellFood.com Storefront
Create your free Iowa storefront on SellFood to reach buyers beyond your local area. Iowa's online sales authorization means every Iowa buyer โ in any city or county โ is a potential customer.
Free account, no listing fees โ start selling the same day you sign up
๐ฑ
Social Media Direct Sales
Iowa cottage food sellers can take orders via Instagram, Facebook, and other social platforms and then deliver or ship. Many successful Iowa home sellers grow their first $10K through local social media before expanding to markets or online stores.
Always comply with platform commerce policies and Iowa's labeling rules
๐ฆ
Shipping & Mail Order
Iowa explicitly authorizes delivery by mail or employee โ meaning you can ship orders via USPS, UPS, FedEx, or similar carriers. Use shelf-stable packaging that travels well. Check destination state rules for cross-state shipments.
Shelf-stable products like jams, cookies, and granola ship beautifully
๐ช
Events, Fairs & Pop-Ups
Iowa's Iowa State Fair, county fairs, craft fairs, and community pop-ups are strong sales channels. You operate as a producer-run temporary food establishment at these events โ no additional food permit needed beyond what state law requires.
Event organizers may have their own vendor requirements โ always verify
